The HYDROSTORE project is focused on developing cutting-edge floating offshore platforms (TRIWIND-HEX) for green hydrogen production, storage, and distribution. These platforms integrate large-scale offshore wind turbines with advanced hydrogen generation and storage systems, aiming to provide cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally sustainable solutions that strengthen Spain’s position in the renewable energy sector. The project seeks to demonstrate how offshore platforms can serve as key hubs for clean energy, supporting the transition to a low-carbon maritime industry.

Astander´s Role:

As a core member of the consortium, Astander is tasked with adapting the platform for maritime operations and exploring its potential as an offshore hydrogen refueling station for ships. Specifically, Astander is responsible for:

Task 6.1: Adaptation of the platform for gas carriers (M6–M15) – This task focuses on evaluating the platform’s structural capacity, storage systems, and operational infrastructure to safely receive and supply hydrogen to gas carrier ships. It involves analyzing storage tanks, compression and decompression systems, docking connections, leak detection mechanisms, ventilation, and operational procedures to ensure both platform and crew safety, as well as regulatory compliance.

Task 6.5: Studies for converting the platform into an offshore hydrogen refueling station (M13–M24) – This task investigates the technical and economic feasibility of converting hydrogen into alternative fuels such as ammonia or bioethanol for storage and use as ship biofuel. Additionally, it examines the modifications required to enable the platform to directly refuel future hydrogen-powered ships, supporting long-term maritime decarbonization.

Through these responsibilities, Astander contributes crucial expertise in platform adaptation, safety, and operational readiness, helping ensure that the HYDROSTORE platforms are not only technically viable but also capable of supporting the maritime sector’s transition toward hydrogen-based fuels.
