CAPCO2 is one of the primary strategic projects integrated into the flagship project TECNAVAL 2025. Its main mission is the analysis, development, and commissioning of a physical pilot plant for CO₂ capture designed to decarbonize maritime transport.
The project focuses on reproducing real ship operating conditions at land-based scale. Through this pilot plant, it is possible to conduct comprehensive experimental testing and optimize the system to increase capture efficiency, thereby ensuring compliance with strict European emissions regulations.

ASTANDER, thanks to its extensive experience in shipbuilding, repair, and conversion, brings distinctive value to the project based on its technical capabilities and in-depth knowledge of the maritime sector.
ASTANDER’s involvement has been key during critical phases of the project:
-Technology assessment: Analysis of the different available carbon capture technologies.
-Fleet analysis: Identification of vessels and market niches with the greatest potential to adopt these solutions.
-Engineering: Active participation in the design and development of the physical prototype.
After two years of research and development, the project has culminated in the design and construction of a fully functional pilot plant. This system stands out as a fully Spanish-designed technology that offers significant competitive advantages.
The project is carried out through a comprehensive cycle that begins with technology analysis and market research to define the target vessel and develop its full engineering scope, covering everything from conceptual design to detailed engineering.
Prior to the physical phase, a Digital Twin is used to simulate and validate the technological integration. Subsequently, the prototype is built, installed, and tested under real conditions, culminating in the evaluation of results and the definition of scaling models to ensure its future implementation across the fleet.

The success of CAPCO2 is the result of the collaboration of a specialized consortium led by the company Willbö and composed of SOERMAR, ASTANDER, Astican, Bureau Veritas Iberia, Grupo Ership, and IDESA.
This project is part of TECNAVAL 2025, approved under the Naval PERTE (Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation). It is managed by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism and funded by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds.
